Perry announced the song on May 7, 2020 through social media, stating that it would be the lead single from her upcoming sixth album and that it would be released on May 15. The cover art, which was also released the same day the song was announced, features Perry laying in a field of yellow daisies with a smile on her face. The same field reappears in the song's music video.

The following day, on May 8, Perry announced her digital flower shop titled "Katy's Daisies", which was a promotional campaign for the single as well as a celebration of Mother's Day. It offers twelve free multicolored bouquet options to "tell someone you care, you love them, you miss them, or simply thank them for believing in you".

Perry will reveal through a Facebook livestream that the song is "a song for all of the dreams that you guys have been dreaming about, and all the things you want to achieve". After the song premiered, she also stated that is was written "a couple of months ago as a call to remain true to the course you've set for yourself, regardless of what others may think".

Lyrics[]

Told them your dreams, and they all started laughing
I guess you're out of your mind 'til it actually happens

I'm the small town
One in seven billion
Why can't it be me?

They told me I was out there, tried to knock me down
Took those sticks and stones, showed 'em I could build a house
They tell me that I'm crazy, but I'll never let 'em change me
'Til they cover me in daisies, daisies, daisies
They said I'm going nowhere, tried to count me out
Took those sticks and stones, showed 'em I could build a house
They tell me that I'm crazy, but I'll never let 'em change me
'Til they cover me in daisies, daisies, daisies

When did we all stop believing in magic?
Why did we put all our hopes in a box in the attic?

I'm the long shot
I'm the Hail Mary
Why can't it be me?

They told me I was out there, tried to knock me down (Knock me down)
Took those sticks and stones, showed 'em I could build a house
They tell me that I'm crazy, but I'll never let 'em change me
'Til they cover me in daisies, daisies, daisies
They said I'm going nowhere, tried to count me out
Took those sticks and stones, showed 'em I could build a house
They tell me that I'm crazy, but I'll never let 'em change me
'Til they cover me in daisies, daisies, daisies

Hey, hey
Oh, cover me in daisies
Hey, hey

I'm the small town
One in seven billion
Why can't it be me?

They told me I was out there, tried to knock me down
Took those sticks and stones, showed 'em I could build a house
They tell me that I'm crazy, but I'll never let 'em change me
'Til they cover me in daisies, daisies, daisies
They said I'm going nowhere, tried to count me out (Count me out)
Took those sticks and stones, showed 'em I could build a house
They tell me that I'm crazy, but I'll never let 'em change me
'Til they cover me in daisies, daisies, daisies
