"Hummingbird Heartbeat" is a song written by Katy Perry, Tricky Stewart, Monte Neuble, and Stacy Barthe for Perry's sophomore mainstream album, Teenage Dream. It was the second or third song written for the album, and was around the time Perry had met her ex-husband, Russell Brand, of whom she said "He gives me that Hummingbird Heartbeat".
It was released as an Australia-only single on September 17, 2012. Upon the release of the Teenage Dream album, it peaked at number 124 on the Gaon Music Chart.
Writing and inspiration[]
Katy first had the idea for this song while she was in her hometown of Santa Barbra, California. "I was at breakfast when I saw this hummingbird, and hummingbird was having breakfast as well..... and I don't know if you know but hummingbirds are supposedly good luck and I was just thinking about hummingbirds. I was thinking 'How fast does their heart beat?', like 'how many beats per minute?' And using that idea as an idea for someone making you feel, instead of those butterflies, making your heart beat really, really fast."
