It was released as the third single through Capitol Records alongside an accompanying music video on September 13, 2024, and was sent to contemporary hit radio on October 1, 2024 and Italian radio on October 8, 2024.
The song reached number 24 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 and number 9 on the Hot Dance/Pop Songs. The song reached number 46 on the UK Singles Downloads Chart. The song also reached number 8 on the New Zealand Hot Singles chart. Commercially, the song was a success in Latin America.
Background[]
During the production of the album 143, Katy saw Doechii as the perfect partner to add to the song. In interviews, Katy says that she served as a "mentor" to Doechii: “We’ve had a lot of candid conversations. And I’m like, “Girl, here are the cheat codes. Try this. If you don’t only want to survive, if you want to thrive, [...], if you want to live a human experience and not just be famous and tucked away in a hotel somewhere, never truly getting to experience the beauty of life.”[1]
On July 10, 2024, Katy Perry went live on Instagram and played a preview of this song - along with NIRVANA and GIMME GIMME.[2]
On September 9, Katy announced on all social media that I'm His, He's Mine ft. Doechii, will be the third single from 143 and released on September 13. [3]
Katy and Doechii performed the song for the first time at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards as part of Katy's medley performance for the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award on September 11, 2024.[4]
Theme[]
The lyrics are a nod to female self-affirmation in a relationship, where Katy and Doechii celebrate being “everything” to their partners more—while dismissing rivals and insecurities. In the verses, Katy rebuffs others' flirtations (“I can see you flirtin' / Why you overworkin'? / On him like a suntan / Go and get your own man”), emphasizing the couple's strength, while Doechii adds an aggressive and possessive verse: "What you tryna do? Great parts of the music video was filmed at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, in Cerdanyola del Vallès.[5] Doechii is seen hanging from a flying drone, before landing on the shoulders of her lover.[6]
