"Never Really Over" is the lead single from Katy Perry's upcoming sixth studio album. The single was officially released on May 31, 2019.

Background

On May 16, 2019, a radio insider revealed that Katy Perry would release a new single on May 31st with the initials "N.R.O". Capitol Records announced on May 24th that they would be accepting entries for an exclusive fan-event for Katy Perry with the announcement's body of text having "N", "R", and "O" capitalized at random parts.[1] The event was for fans 21-years-old and older. Perry herself announced the single's title and release date along with the official single cover.[2]

Norwegian pop singer Dagny is credited as a co-writer to the song. In an interview with the Norwegian press, Dagny revealed that she was not a part of writing the song. Perry and her team fell for her track "Love You Like That" and made a new song based on it. She said "Katy Perry and her team wanted to make their own version, and they wanted us credited. They have had an open dialogue with us throughout this process." She also added "This is the first song on your new album, and yes, I hear. It's like Katy Perry back as the queen of pop. It's totally wild! It was great to hear this masterpiece."[3]

When Dagny was asked on how she felt being credited without being part of the actual writing process, she said, "It's incredibly cool that she does this, she could just as well let it be. I mean, what would I do, call my non-existent lawyer to take her to court? It says a lot about her that she's not just going to try to get away with it." In regards if the song sounds similar to her own she mentioned "There are many similarities. Some will say they are very similar, others may say they are not the same at all, but I think there are some harmonies there and the way her song is built up, which resembles much. Mostly musical, not lyrically."

Lyrics

I'm losing my self control
Yeah, you start and I trickle back in
But I don't wanna fall down the rabbit hole
Cross my heart, I won't do it again

I tell myself, tell myself, tell myself, "Draw the line"
And I do, I do
But once in a while, I trip up, and I cross the line
And I think of you

Two years, and just like that
My head still takes me back
Thought it was done, but I
Guess it's never really over
Oh, we were such a mess
But wasn’t it the best?
Thought it was done, but I
Guess it's never really over

Just because it's over doesn't mean it's really over
And if I think it over, maybe you'll be coming over again
And I'll have to get over you all over again
Just because it's over doesn’t mean it's really over
And if I think it over, maybe you'll be coming over again
And I'll have to get over you all over again

I guess I could try hypnotherapy
I gotta rewire this brain
'Cause I can't even go on the internet
Without even checking your name

I tell myself, tell myself, tell myself, "Draw the line"
And I do, I do
But once in a while, I trip up, and I cross the line
I think of you

Two years, and just like that
My head still takes me back
Thought it was done, but I
Guess it's never really over
Oh, we were such a mess
But wasn't it the best?
Thought it was done, but I
Guess it's never really over

Just because it's over doesn't mean it's really over
And if I think it over, maybe you'll be coming over again
And I'll have to get over you all over again
Just because it's over doesn't mean it's really over
And if I think it over, maybe you'll be coming over again
And I'll have to get over you all over again

Thought we kissed goodbye
Thought we meant this time was the last
But I guess it's never really over
Thought we drew the line right through you and I
Can't keep going back
I guess it's never really over, yeah

Two years, and just like that
My head still takes me back
Thought it was done, but I
Guess it's never really over

Just because it's over doesn't mean it's really over
And if I think it over, maybe you'll be coming over again
And I'll have to get over you all over again
(And I'll have to get over you all over again)
Just because it's over doesn't mean it's really over
And if I think it over, maybe you'll be coming over again
And I'll have to get over you all over again
(Over you all over again)

Thought we kissed goodbye
Thought we meant this time was the last
But I guess it's never really over
Thought we drew the line right through you and I
Can't keep going back
I guess it's never really over
