Smile is the fifth mainstream studio album by Katy Perry. This is her sixth solo studio album overall, including the Christian-gospel album, Katy Hudson. It was released on August 28, 2020,[1] only just two days after giving birth to her daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom. The album became available on CD, vinyl, cassette and digital download by Capitol Records.
Background[]
On May 30, 2017, Perry confirmed that she will start working on an album during Witness: The Tour. As promised, writing for the album started after the first leg of the tour when Perry was spotted with Ian Kirkpatrick. "Katy Perry and I had a session," Kirkpatrick said. "We did a couple of days and she is f—ing amazing. Before any of her artistry, Katy Perry as a person is the funniest human being I've ever met in my life. I was so surprised."[2] Around this time it was also reported that Perry had tapped in with producer Steve Mac to record songs together, though these reports may not be true.
During the European leg of the tour, Perry made a stop in Stockholm, Sweden where she reunited with longtime collaborator and 'mentor', Max Martin. They presumably worked together during this time.[3]
During the Oceania leg of the tour, Zedd was announced as the opening act for the show. He had previously commented on wanting to work with Perry but never having the chance. After the leg, Zedd tweeted a video of his experience and Perry is seen in the studio with him, thus confirming they have worked together. Their collaboration, "365", was released on February 14, 2019. It is a track from Zedd's upcoming third studio album, but was not featured on Perry's album.
On September 8 and 29, 2018, long-time collaborator Greg Wells was in the studio with Perry. This was confirmed through Instagram. It is unknown if these recording sessions were for the recording of "Waving Through a Window".
On December 12, 2019, Perry confirmed in an interview that the album is likely to be released in the following year. In March 2020 she announced her pregnancy in her music video for the single, "Never Worn White". She confirmed later after it's release that it would come out in summer 2020.
On May 7, 2020, Perry announced via her social media accounts that the lead single, "Daisies", would be released on May 15, 2020 through Capitol Records. She began promoting the single by setting up a virtual flower shop, through which fans can send digital bouquets to their loved ones via email and on social media. Each bouquet title and default accompanying message corresponds to a lyric from a track on the album.
On May 12, 2020, Perry announced through Amazon's virtual assistant, Alexa, that the album will be released on August 14, 2020.[1]
On May 15, 2020, "Daisies" was released and its music video premiered on YouTube. She performed the song live on American Idol and Good Morning America. On June 26, she also performed a deep-house remix of the song for Can't Cancel Pride. The remix was also a medley of her songs "I Kissed a Girl", "Peacock", "Walking On Air" and "Swish Swish".
On July 27, 2020, Perry announced that the album release date would be delayed by two weeks due to "unavoidable production delays".
On August 2, 2020, Perry's online store began selling limited-edition versions of the CD and vinyl which featured five alternate artworks including one cover that had been created by a fan.
Singles[]
"Never Really Over" was released on May 31, 2019 as a stand-alone single, peaking at #15 in the United States. The first single released in promotion of the album, serving as the lead, was "Daisies". "Daisies" peaked at #40 in the United States. "Smile" was released on July 10, 2020, along with the album pre-order. It peaked at #121 in the United States. "What Makes a Woman" was released as a promotional single on August 21, 2020, just a week before the album dropped.
Artworks[]
During #SmileSunday on August 2, 2020, Perry surprised fans by revealing that the album would be getting 5 alternate artworks pressed on vinyl and sold as CDs. These were put on sale exclusively on Perry's official site as a "Flash Sale" and were only available until the following Thursday. "Alternate Cover #1" is actually a fan-made artwork by Twitter user FAMEKILLED. The artwork was brought to Perry's attention after going viral on social media, with many calling for her to change the artwork to the fan-made one. Perry commissioned the Twitter user to retouch the artwork for pressings.
